Abstract

Bi’ah lughawiyah, or language environment, is one of the instructional strategies commonly employed to support second language acquisition. At RA Darul Qur’an, this approach is implemented across the student body as a means of fostering Arabic language mastery. What makes this case particularly compelling is that the program is being applied at the elementary school level, which presents a unique context for study. This research seeks to examine the bi’ah lughawiyah system at RA Darul Qur’an, focusing on how it is structured, how it operates in practice, and what factors either support or hinder its implementation. The study uses a qualitative approach with field research as its primary method. Data were gathered through interviews and documentation. The findings indicate that RA Darul Qur’an establishes its language environment through multiple dimensions: visual aspects, auditory elements, social interactions, and academic frameworks, particularly through school policies. The bi’ah lughawiyah is practiced during specific times-before formal lessons begin, during breaks, and throughout Arabic language classes. Supporting factors in the implementation include the presence of musyrif (Arabic language mentors) and teachers who consistently speak Arabic in their interactions with students. However, the study also identified obstacles, such as a number of students who quickly lose motivation in learning Arabic. This attitude can have a negative influence on their peers, potentially reducing overall engagement in the program.
